Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching and fortunately for Bay Area locals, one of the biggest events of the weekend is taking place in San Francisco with the debut of I Love This City, a two day electronic music festival featuring Tiesto, Duck Sauce, Steve Aoki and more.
The event, located conveniently in the AT&T ballpark parking lot, offers the perfect opportunity for a “staycation,” without the hassle of holiday traffic and inflated gas prices.
One of the bigger names of the weekend is Steve Aoki, whose long, straight black hair and handlebar mustache have become a well-known caricature representing his legacy. Aoki is the founder of Dim Mak records and has been a household name in the electronic music world since the release of his debut album Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles in 2008.
Another highly anticipated Friday set is that of James Murphy, frontman of LCD Soundsystem, the infamously short-lived indie dance band responsible for several hits including “Daft Punk is Playing at My House.” Murphy has also been djing since the mid-nineties, though his solo electronic efforts, which combine electronica with disco sounds, are less well-known than his career with LCD Soundsystem.
Saturday brings a diverse mix of headliners, including Tiesto, Dutch house superstar Laidback Luke and Canadian dubstep dj Excision. Non-headlining acts for the weekend include Holy Ghost!, the electropop duo hailing from New York who released a self-titled debut album last year. The Crystal Method, another electronic duo (this one specializing in breakbeats), will also be appearing at I Love This City. The Crystal Method has been making hit EDM records since 1996, and alongside other EDM artists that emerged in the 1990s like Fatboy Slim, helped to make the big beat sound popular.
I Love This City adds even more diversity to the mix with Cut Chemist, who is known not only for his sample-heavy electronic mixes, but also as a founding member of the ‘90s hip hop group Jurassic 5. Dubstep fans will be pleased to hear UK dubstep producer Cookie Monsta, as well as a local Bay Area powerhouse in the American dubstep community, Nit Grit from San Jose. A newer act to watch at I Love This City is Pictureplane, whose electro-glitch sounds were heard recently at SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas.
With 15 other acts already on the poster, I Love This City has also promised to announce “phase 2”, adding even more artists and headliners to the lineup. Since the festival is an 18 and over event, a younger crowd is expected. Two-day general admission festival passes and VIP two-day passes will go on sale Friday, March 23rd at 10am.
I Love This City takes place on Friday, May 25th and Saturday, May 26th at the Lot at AT&T Park. Tickets are $125 for General Admission – $350 for VIP.
